Our Wedding

I actually knew mom first. See, mom runs a shelter for homeless dogs (<a href="https://minnesotagreyhoundrescue.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Minnesota Greyhound Rescue</a>) …and sadly, that was me at only 11 months old. My name at that time was Brown Bullet (mom called me “Wooly Bully” because I still had my fuzzy puppy coat), and for whatever reason, my racing owner didn’t want me anymore. So mom took me in.

I hadn’t been at the shelter very long before I met dad. It was May 2019. He met some other dogs that day too, but he liked me the best. A couple weeks later, I moved in with dad to our first apartment in Lowertown, St Paul. You saw all the pictures.

I liked being a city dog. We walked along the riverfront and saw all the bridges; we watched the people at Union Depot from our living room window. When the pandemic happened, it was just me and dad, together all the time, and that was just fine with me.

Dad loved me so much that he wanted to help more dogs like me; so he started volunteering for mom’s dog rescue. He did phone interviews of people who wanted to adopt dogs. So he and mom started chatting more and more, and they became good friends. Sometimes we would go to the shelter and visit mom, and I got to run in her big yard. When dad and I took long drives, like to visit Grandpaw and Grandma, dad would call mom from the car and they would talk-talk-talk while I napped in the back seat.

Now like I said, dad and I spent almost all of our time together, so I knew him better than anyone else - especially more than my cat sister, Minnie. And I thought that he and mom should be more than just best friends.

So one day, in June 2021, I decided to help things along. Mom had come over to hang out and have dinner with us, and after dinner she and dad were talk-talk-talking the way they always did. Mom was in the chair and dad was on my little couch with me. When mom got up from her chair, I saw my opportunity. I jumped up and stole her spot, and made sure I looked super comfy so that she wouldn’t have the heart to move me. The only spot left for her to sit was on my couch, right next to dad. Bingo.

Who made the first move is a subject of great debate between mom and dad, and only I know the real truth – but I’ll never tell. All I know is, just like they say in human fairytales, they lived happily ever after. Two years later dad and I bought a house right next to mom’s so we could see each other all the time. And later that same year, dad got me a dog!

Jonas came to live with us that Christmas. And now we are all a big happy family. I’ve got lots of dog stepbrothers, two cat roommates, and five human siblings that I love very much. And mom and dad are my forever mom and dad.

Gunflint Lake is one of my favorite places to go with my parents. My best dog friend Jimmy and I used to call it “Big Dish” because the water is so cool and yummy to drink. It’s peaceful, and we get to take long walks and spend time together.

Our little family can’t wait to show this place to all of you.

A Note from Us... 

We’ve spent a lot of time thinking through the logistics of a wedding in such a remote spot. We know it’s a lot to ask, and everyone’s financial situations are different. Please know this: we would absolutely love for you to join us, but there is zero pressure. Truly, no hard feelings if it doesn’t work out—we completely understand. What matters most is that we get to celebrate this new chapter surrounded by the people we love, however that looks.

LODGING INFORMATION

Lodging will be at Gunflint Lodge &amp; Outfitters, which has about 25 cabins on site plus a handful of hotel rooms. You are welcome to head up to Gunflint Lodge at any time, but we have the whole property to ourselves for our wedding weekend beginning on Friday. Gunflint's cabins vary in price point, size, layout, and amenities (think hot tubs, saunas, grills, multiple bedrooms, etc.), so there are plenty of options to fit different needs and budgets. Many of our guests know one another - either good friends / family / etc. We 100% encourage friend groups and family units to book the larger cabins together to share the cost across folks! If you are curious who else is on the invite list for this reason, send Beckett a text! If you're traveling with at least one other person, please prioritize the cabins over the hotel rooms so we can accommodate singles! If our guests configure themselves in ways that surprise us and we fill up the Gunflint Lodge, there are ample opportunities as close as quarter mile away, at a similar price point. Get in touch with us, as needed.

In order to book your preferred cabin for the weekend, give the lodge a call directly! A very friendly human will help sort out all your details and answer any questions you may have. We recommend taking a look at the <a href="https://gunflint.com/interactive-map/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">cabin options online</a> and calling with a few ideas to walk through with the front desk. There are plenty of options to choose from, but we recommend doing this as quickly as possible to get your preferred pick! If you attempt to book online, the weekend will show as unavailable, so please call to book! We hope you will arrive by dinnertime on Friday for our very casual welcome dinner and stay through Sunday morning! However; we certainly encourage you to stay extra nights on either end to enjoy the natural beauty of Gunflint lake and have a relaxing little mini vacation. We will be sending out even more information soon in the form of a "Know Before You Go" guide!

Transportation Information

If you are driving to the wedding... If you are going to make a trip out of it, you are more than welcome to make the journey fully by driving. There is ample free parking onsite at Gunflint Lodge (and plenty to do along your journey). If you are flying into Minneapolis/ Saint Paul International Airport (MSP)... Rent a car at the airport and make your way up to Gunflint Lodge &amp; Outfitters. It is roughly a 6-hour drive with a couple short breaks, or it can be a longer trip if you stop to sightsee (we have suggestions for how to make a roadtrip of it!). Food 

Because of the remote location, options for dining are limited. We recommend stopping down in Grand Marais for any snacks or alcohol you want for your cabin! When you're onsite, Justine's Restaurant at Gunflint Lodge is one of our favorite places for a bite to eat in Minnesota! We’ve arranged meal plans through the lodge restaurant to help simplify things and reduce costs. This will be rolled into your booking fee and kids will be at a cheaper rate. Of course you will not be paying for meals that will be part of wedding activities. We've got you there! No worries about double charges to be had! All cabins also have a kitchen and access to either a private grill or one a few steps away shared with another cabin.

GENERAL INFORMATION

If I have questions about anything, what should I do? ◦ If it is regarding lodging, give Gunflint Lodge a call at (218) 388-2294. When you call, a very friendly midwestern person will get you what you need. ◦ If it is anything else, send an email to: <a href="mailto:beckettjenwedding@gmail.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">beckettjenwedding@gmail.com</a>. Where is the wedding taking place? Everything will occur at <a href="https://gunflint.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Gunflint Lodge &amp; Outfitters</a>. Is there a dress code? We encourage folks to dress up and have fun! We love fashion, especially unique and colorful fashion. Use this event as an excuse to wear the fun dress, the fun jacket, the new hat, the bolo tie, the fun shoes, etc. Most importantly, come in something that makes you feel authentically you! What is the weather going to be like in Grand Marais, MN?This is one of our biggest questions too. Weather in northern Minnesota in mid-May can be a little… adventurous. Historically, it can range anywhere from the mid-40s to the low-70s, and Jen is very much rooting for the warmer end of that spectrum. That said, being up north and right on the water means conditions can change a few times throughout the day. We recommend layering: think comfortable daytime clothes for exploring, hiking, or lake-side wandering, plus a light jacket or sweater you can easily toss on or off. For the evening wedding festivities, bringing an extra layer (or a beer blanket lol) is a great idea. We’ll also have plenty of cozy blankets available, and Gunflint Lodge has no shortage of the most scenic fire pits and bonfire spots you can imagine. As we get closer, we’ll all be watching the forecast and making decisions that best serve everyone’s comfort. Minnesota weather keeps things interesting, but we promise we’ll be prepared. What do you recommend for lodging? See the <a href="https://www.jenandbeckett2026.com/us/jen-komatsu-and-beckett-adams-2026-05-16/travel" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Travel &amp; Logistics Section</a> (TL:DR Gunflint Lodge) and the Gunflint Lodge-specific FAQs below. When should we arrive? We would love for everyone to come in on Friday and join us for our Welcome Dinner at Justine’s onsite from 5:00pm until 8:00pm and some time around the fire. This will also make Saturday less stressful leading up to the wedding festivities. When should we arrive to the Ceremony on the day of? We will start at 4:00pm. Come by starting at around 3:45pm-ish to get settled! Is the wedding outside? The Ceremony will be outside! Everything else will be inside. We will have full access to sit by the bonfires later in the evening though and patio heaters when outside! Can I bring a guest? This will be included in your invite/RSVP. Are kids welcome? Yes! Gunflint Lodge is an awesome place for kids and families. All are welcome! Once we hit party time, it’s up to your adult discretion whether they are around! Are dogs welcome? Yes, actually! Bring them around at any point. Use your adult discretion on this one! What else is there to do besides the wedding festivities? The Gunflint Lodge property has multiple <a href="https://gunflint.com/activities/summer-activities/hiking/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">scenic hiking trails</a>, from short quiet walks to longer, more advanced trails. We recommend Lookout Point, it's a short hike and the view is incredible. There are kayaks and canoes available for lodge guests onsite. If you’re just looking to relax, there’s plenty of bonfire spots by the lake, and many of the cabins have hot tubs. Additionally, the lodge will provide some <a href="https://gunflint.com/interpretive-naturalist-programs/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">naturalist activities</a> during our wedding weekend (more info on that forthcoming). You will be mailed an extra-special “Know Before You Go” guide very soon which will also include suggested things to see and do on the way to/from Gunflint!! Do you have a wedding hashtag? We do not. Nothing really spoke to us! That said, we love photos and we want to see everything from the weekend (including your travels). Tag us in everything. 😘

GUNFLINT LODGE

What time is check-in and check-out? Check-in begins at 4:00 PM, and check-out is at 10:00 AM. Heads up: If you arrive after Guest Services hours, please stop by the front desk during your stay to pick up your wedding welcome gift bag. We are super excited about these! Will the resort be open to the public during the wedding weekend?Nope! For the wedding weekend starting on Friday evening, the resort is reserved exclusively for our wedding and you all, as our guests. This allows lodging, meals, and events to be thoughtfully coordinated so everyone can relax and enjoy the celebration. What information does the resort confirm with each guest?To ensure lodging and meals are set up correctly, the resort will confirm: ◦ The number of adults staying in the cabin◦ Whether any children will be staying◦ Whether any pets will be staying Why does the lodge confirm the number of guests staying in each cabin?Confirming guest counts helps ensure that lodging and meals are arranged correctly and prevents any surprises later! This benefits all of us. What is included with my wedding weekend stay?Your Friday and Saturday night stay includes lodging and the following meals at Justine’s: ◦ Saturday breakfast◦ Saturday lunch◦ Sunday breakfast As a guest of ours you’ll be hosted at the Friday night Welcome Dinner and the Saturday night Wedding Reception, including open-bar cocktail hours. There is no charge to you for these events! Drink up! Is this an all-inclusive weekend?The weekend is designed to feel mostly all-inclusive, so you can arrive, settle in, and enjoy your time with us and all of the fantastic folks attending. Lodging and the meals listed above are included, with additional food or beverages available for purchase outside of scheduled events. When do I pay my deposit and receive confirmation?Once your reservation is finalized, the resort will place a card on file, process your deposit, and send a confirmation email with your stay details. When will I receive my confirmation?You’ll receive a written confirmation via email from the lodge directly once your reservation is complete and your deposit has been processed. A follow-up email with the full wedding weekend schedule and everything you need to know will be sent closer to your arrival. Can I add an extra night before or after the wedding?Yes! Ya'll are welcome to arrive early or extend your stay beyond the wedding weekend. We will definitely be there! Any additional nights are booked separately from the wedding reservation to keep details clear and accurate for us in our planning efforts. If you’d like to add extra nights before or after the wedding, the lodge can help you arrange those dates once your wedding weekend reservation is complete. What is included in the meals that are covered by my meal plan?Each included meal covers your entrée, side, and a non-alcoholic beverage. Appetizers, desserts, and alcoholic beverages are not included but may be ordered separately. Reminder, this will only be Saturday breakfast (think: mimosas!), Saturday lunch, and Sunday breakfast. How does the meal plan work when I’m dining?After your meal, your server will bring you a check. You may add gratuity and charge gratuity or any additional items to your room, or you may pay directly in the restaurant. Is there parking onsite? Yes, plenty and it is included in your stay. Our hope of having everyone in one place is to ensure safety post alcohol consumption. We want our favorite folks around to have some fun! Is there a liquor store onsite? Nope. We encourage you to pick up any food and/or booze that you want down in Grand Marais before you head up the Gunflint Trail. As a LAST resort, Poplar Haus has a small liquor store onsite.

Sunshine is Jen's eldest daughter and is in her 3rd year at Gustavus Adolphus College, studying to be an art teacher! She loves to draw, swing dance, crochet, watch anime, and take care of dogs. She is Jonas's favorite human.

Blake is Beckett's older brother (barely, they are less than a year and a half apart).  He lives in Seattle, Washington with his lovely partner, Lucy, and their pretty angry cat, Peanut.  He loves animals, music, traveling, and his people just as much as Beckett.

Maisy is in her 2nd year at College of St. Benedict studying Environmental Science, although she started this academic year with 4 months in Athens, Greece. Maisy is a talented artist and athlete. Her heart dog was Hootie, whom we lost this past year.

Anthony is Beckett's best guy friend in Minnesota, and Jen and Beckett's favorite third wheel. Beckett and Anthony first bonded over (and continue to bond over) coffee and video games. And folks ... he's single!

Anthony Dosh

Milo is a freshman at Gustavus Adolphus College, possibly studying political science or pre-law. Milo likes watching football, reading political gossip, and playing (read: yelling at his) Xbox. His favorite dog is Wolfgang Amadeus Greyhound. 

Milo Komatsu

David is from Beckett's middle school era (iykyk) and is one of Beckett's oldest friends. They have remained best friends throughout their lives - at different colleges and now in different states. Most recently, Beckett stood next to David as he married Julia. 

David Work

Poppy is a senior in high school where she plays in the symphonic, pep, marching, and jazz bands. She likes to read, play Nintendo Switch, and tell rather off-color jokes. Her favorite flying monkey (dog) is Salvador.

Poppy Komatsu

Kayla is one of Beckett's first Minnesota friends, and one of Jen's only friends, period! She is a loyal dog mom to a very cute westie named Max, avid theatre-goer, proud Swiftie, and steadfast friend. If you see her, say hi - she's super extroverted.  

Kayla Burfiend 

Zanners is Jen's youngest kid. This is the first wedding that she has attended! She's in 7th grade, does Taekwondo, plays drums in the school band and at School of Rock, and watches way too much anime. Her favorite dogs are Wolfie and Cowboy.

Suzannah Komatsu

Most simply explained: Julia is David's wife. But she is so much more than that. Since Beckett and Julia met nearly a decade ago, they have been kindred souls and have grown just as close as Beckett and David (if not closer).  Julia is the kind of friend you dream of having, and she planned a hell of a wedding last August.
